Ingredients

  • 2 cups frozen fruit, such as berries, mango, banana, or pineapple
  • 1/2 to 1 cup milk, dairy or dairy-free, as needed
  • 1/2 cup Greek yogurt or dairy-free yogurt
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons honey, maple syrup, or other sweetener, optional
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, optional
  • Pinch of salt

Toppings:

  • Granola
  • Sliced fruit
  • Chia seeds
  • Coconut flakes
  • Nut butter drizzle
  • Hemp seeds
  • Chocolate chips
  • Crushed nuts
  • Pumpkin seeds

Instructions

  1. Blend the base.
Add the frozen fruit, yogurt, milk, sweetener if using, vanilla extract, and salt to a blender. Blend until thick and smooth. Start with a small amount of milk and add more only as needed. The mixture should be thick enough to eat with a spoon, not drink like a smoothie.
  2. Adjust the consistency.
If the mixture is too thick to blend, add a little more milk, one tablespoon at a time. If it becomes too thin, add a few more frozen fruit pieces to thicken it up again. A smoothie bowl should hold its shape when poured into a bowl.
  3. Pour into the bowl.
Transfer the blended mixture into a serving bowl. Use the back of a spoon to smooth the top if needed. A thicker base will help the toppings stay in place.
  4. Add toppings.
Top the smoothie bowl with granola, sliced fruit, seeds, coconut flakes, nut butter drizzle, or any other toppings you like. Try to add a mix of crunchy, sweet, and fresh elements for the best texture.
  5. Serve immediately.
Smoothie bowls are best enjoyed right away while the base is cold and thick. If it sits too long, it may soften, so prepare your toppings before blending if possible.

Recipe Tips

  • Use mostly frozen fruit for the thickest texture.
  • Banana helps make the bowl extra creamy.
  • Greek yogurt gives more protein and a richer texture.
  • For a dairy-free version, use coconut yogurt or almond milk yogurt.
  • If you want a more dessert-like bowl, add chocolate chips and a drizzle of peanut butter.
